In 1977, Beth Abney of Athens, GA, wrote a press release to the local paper covering Balloon Day, a once-upon-a-time reading-incentive program for the children of Oglethorpe Elementary School.

Launch is a series of hand-printed monotypes in postcard-form, inspired by letters and photographs found in the Special Collections Library at the University of Georgia. The prints celebrate and critique Balloon Day as part of Athens history.

While the event united young people and senior citizens through reading, it may have also had adverse affects on the environment and native wildlife through the release (and eventual remains) of more than 2,000 balloons.
